Weathering and Erosion Science Games

3 games

In this series of games, your students will learn about how rainfall helps to shape the land and affects the types of living things found in a region. Weathering and Erosion learning objective — based on NGSS and state standards — delivers improved student engagement and academic performance in your classroom, as demonstrated by research.

Concepts Covered

The geosphere includes Earth’s crust, mantle, outer, and inner cores. Earth’s inner core is hot and mostly metallic. Earth’s mantle is hot, soft, solid rock. Earth’s crust contains rock, soil, and sediment. Rocks are hard materials found on Earth’s surface made of one or more minerals. Soils are formed by the weathering of rock and the decomposition of plant and animal remains. Sediment is a small piece of weathered rock.

The hydrosphere includes Earth’s water in liquid, ice, and gas form, including the water in the atmosphere, oceans, lakes, streams, soils, and groundwater. The atmosphere includes all of the gases surrounding the Earth. The biosphere includes all of the living organisms on Earth. Weather is defined as the conditions of the atmosphere at a particular place and time. Climate describes the typical weather conditions in an area over a long period of time.

Weathering is the process by which rocks, soil, and sediments are broken down into smaller particles. Some agents of weathering include water, ice, wind, gravity, and living organisms. Physical, or mechanical, weathering is the breakdown of rock into smaller pieces without changing the composition of the rock. Chemical weathering is the breakdown of rock into smaller pieces by chemicals that change the composition of the rock. Erosion is the process by which rock, soil, and/or sediments are transported from one location to another.
