Concepts Covered
Adding and subtracting fractions is similar to whole number computation in that it adds or subtracts two number line quantities. Fractions are a sum of unit fractions. Use visual models to show that unit fractions compose fractions. A mixed number is a whole number plus a fraction smaller than one, written without the addition sign. Use equivalent fractions for mixed numbers by converting the whole into a composition of unit fractions. Add and subtract mixed numbers by using equivalent fractions with the same unit fraction and adding or subtracting the numerators only.
In order to formulate an equation of the form A+B = C for a word problem, the numbers A, B, and C must all refer to the same (or equivalent) wholes or unit amounts. Word problems can be result unknown, total unknown, change unknown, or both addends unknown.
